Home Improvement Repair Question by Marcy M: Where can I find good home improvement companies that work on aluminum siding projects in Brooklyn, NY?
I need to get an estimate on how much it would cost to repair (or replace, if necessary) my aluminum siding. Additionally, I need to find a company that can do masonry (cement and brick work) work (we need new outdoor stairs). I’d like to find a site that has a listing of outstanding, top, or leading construction companies located in Brooklyn, Queens, or Manhattan here in New York City (NYC).

Thank you!

Home Improvement Tips Question by Gilly: What kind of paint should I use to paint an area rug?
I have a plain, off-white area rug that I want to dress up a little. I got the idea from a home improvement show where they used paint for the same purpose, but I don’t remember the details such as what kind of paint they used or how they were able to completely cover the area desired without having the paint bleed into the rest of the rug. Anyone done this before? Tips?
Ok, so we’ve established that dye is better…how do I keep it from bleeding??

Best answer:

Answer by Banjo and Sullivan
I think you should use dye instead of paint. It is a rug after all….

Home Improvement Loans Question by suzycrmchz: Question – want to replace ugly tile floors in new condo…?
and redo baths with new tile and showers only – not tub/showers. Also want new counter tops in baths and kitchen and new sinks. Do I get a home improvement loan first or do I get estimates first? Do big box stores like Lowes and Home Depot do these types of things? I’m so afraid of getting a crappy contractor!!! I’m a single, 50 something woman and feel I could so easily be taken advantage of!

Best answer:

Answer by math_prof
Get the estimates first. Take the highest one and add about 10 or 15%. Then et the loan. Yes, the big box guys do have a stable of contractors that they use.

many Ga. cities and counties offer these type loans. although they are administered through local governments the money comes from a community development program from the state. if your city or county doesn’t offer one contact the farmers home loan association in your area. their programs are geared toward rural areas.

Home Improvement Tips – How to do laminate flooring?

3466580276 62b62fe369 m Home Improvement Tips How to do laminate flooring?

Home Improvement Tips Question by x1y2z353022: How to do laminate flooring?
What are the advantages/limitations and do’s/ don’ts of laminate flooring? I would like to use it for my kitchen and bathroom. Is it water-proof? Is there a special one for bathroom? Where can I find step-by-step installation instructions as well as helpful tips? Do I need to put on a water barrier layer before installing the laminate flooring? What are some of the good brands of laminate flooring? Any and all comments will be appreciated. I am a novice home improvement person.

Best answer:

Answer by Mike L
Hmm, as a carpenter I wouldn’t really advise using laminate flooring for either room, due to the high moisture content in both. If you really do want laminate, the only brand I would use is called Pergo; it’s probably the best one in the market, but it’s not cheap-you’ll be looking at around 25-35 quid a square metre. However, it IS highly moisture resistant, and as such is suitable for bathrooms/kitchens etc.
You don’t need to put down a moisture barrier unless you are laying the flooring onto old concrete or screed. To do laminate flooring properly ie to achieve a professional look, mark the thickness of the flooring on each door casing leg that the flooring will be touching. Using a panel saw, cut that amount off the bottom of each casing leg, and the flooring will slide right underneath when you lay it-far too many DIYers simply cut the flooring around the door casing and it looks bloody awful. When laying the floor, leave a 5mm gap between the laminate & the skirtings to allow for expansion, and cover this with a beading. If you are laying the floor in the bathroom, you’ll find it a whole lot easier to have a plumber (or do it yourself if you feel comfortable with it) remove the WC pan & wash basin pedestal to allow you to lay the floor. I say use a plumber, as once you have laid the floor, the height that the pedestal & WC sit at will obviously have been raised by the thickness of the new floor & insulation, and it will be easier for a pro to resite them appropriately. Cutting the floor around the WC & pedestal is both time consuming and almost always messy, even for a pro, so my advice is to bring in a plumber to remove the aforementioned sanitary items for you.

Lowes Home Improvement Question by kjldfah;slkfwjhbw: How much would it cost me for someone from Lowe’s Home Improvement store in McAlester, OK to install sheetrock?
Since everone is telling me I can’t put up drywall on my ceiling and walls by myself, I need to know how much it would cost an expert from McAlester, OK to come to Pittsburg, OK to do it for me??

Best answer:

Answer by Casey
I checked Lowe’s website and they don’t mention that they install drywall. You may want to check that out, if they don’t you can maybe ask around the store and see who is recommended.

Here are some good guidelines.

What It’s Going To Cost
It’s important to remember that prices for materials and labor vary from one locale to another, as well as from project to project, so the best way to get an idea of what any drywall project is going to run is to talk to drywall contractors in your area. Nonetheless, it’s helpful to get a general idea of what a typical drywall installation is going to run, just so you have a frame of reference once you start talking to potential contractors. Drywall cost is fairly standard across the board. For your typical drywall installation you should expect to pay at least $ 1 per square foot. Maybe a little more, maybe a little less, but all in all this is a fair price. Remember to buy about 15% more than you calculate for cutting.

You Get What You Pay For
As with any home improvement project, you should expect to get what you pay for when it comes to drywall cost, especially when it comes to installation. Remember, nailing up the sheets of drywall is the easy part. If that was all drywall installation required, drywall contractors would be out of a job. The trick is covering the nail holes and seams so that when you paint over it, there’s little or no evidence that you’ve got anything but a solid, single wall beneath. If you try to cut corners here you’re likely to get someone who does shoddy work when it comes to covering up the evidence, and you’ll be reminded of your lapse in judgment every time you walk past the area where the cut-rate work was done.
