Family Room Remodel Question by Crazy Cousin: How big should a great room be?
My husband and I are remodeling & adding to our house. Our architect came up with a design that has ample room for the kitchen and dining areas of the great room, but it looks like the living/family room section will only be 12′x 22’8″. Does that seem like enough space?
The overall size of the great room is the previously mentioned size, plus 30’6″ x 20′ for the kitchen and dining area.

Family Room Remodel Question by : which is better? a design-build firm, or a separate designer and builder for a home addition/remodel?
We are planning a renovation–remodeling the kitchen, tearing down a wall, redoing the entry way, and adding a family room–to make a “great room” (kitchen/family/dining). we are debating between a separate architect/designer, or a design-build combo….thoughts?
Best answer:
Answer by Guest Both the architect/designer and design-build combo should employ an architect for the design of modifications you would like to perform. Some design-build combos do not have architects on staff and their drawings are usually prepared with less detail leaving more to your and their imagination which they get to interpret as they build. See if they have a registered architect they will be using.
Although you will not see a lot of difference in the cost of the design as provided by two or three architect/designer firms, you will be able to put(or have the architect / designer put) the drawings out for bid by three or four contractors that they have had good luck and received quality work on their past projects. This cost reducing process will not be provided by the design-build approach.
You will have all your eggs in one basket with the design-build approach. You will have an overall lower total project cost if you go with the design build combo but you will have very little say in any conflicts or misunderstandings because they have all the players on their side. You will never hear the architect say that any change must be made because that would be counterproductive for the design-build firm. The total cost will be less because you will receive less.
If you are looking for quality work separate the designer and builder. If you want to think you are saving money, may sacrifice quality, use design-build. A design-build approach will complete the projects most rapidly. They can start the work before the complete design has been completed.

Family Room Remodel Question by Me, Myself & I: Approximately how much would it cost to completely remodel the inside of a two-family A-frame house?
I am curious as to about how much it would cost to paint (house currently has lead paint) the inside of an 8-room house (two floors), completely remodel the bathroom and kitchen, sand the hardwood floors, wallpaper all rooms, and put down new linoleum on the kitchen floor and update all the electrical outlets (service has been updated from the street and in the cellar). The house has new windows and a new heating system. Hopefully, answers will be from construction people who have experience. Thanks!

Answer by Khavren You dont’ want to know cost, because that will vary based on the location the house is in, the contracter you are able to make a deal with, and the amount of red tape you have to go through with the local gov. You want to ask how much TIME that sort of job would probably take.

We are trying to remodel the inside of our home. The family room runs into the dining area. What is a great color for a smaller size room? The dining area is not formal, this is a cape cod style home, like a cottage, with about 2500 sq ft,but the rooms are not very big.Can anyone give specific colors?Where to buy them, and what color to trim the room?By that,I mean the mouldings? Any help, very appreciative!
Best answer:
Answer by lmcbirch In a small room keep your color light to open up the room (dark colors will makt it look smaller)
light sage green walls will make it feel tranqual and relaxing with a off white or cream on windows and moulding will give it a great finish. =) hope this helps

Family Room Remodel Question by Realtorific: What lamps do you think would work best for my newly remodeled family room?
I’m remodeling my family room with new contemporary wall colors, decor, wood floor, and window treatments. I also want new lamps, but am having trouble picking one. Do you think glass, black, nickle finish?
Examples would be appreciated. I have an open floor plan with colors of tan, chocolate, and red.
Wall colors: tan, chocolate, & red. The couches and chair is dark red/burgundy leather, end tables are black, and floor is wood. The fireplace is white. Wall decor is black framed black/white prints, & black metal/white candle decor.
It’s an open floor plan. The chocolate is on the fireplace wall. The tan is on the two parallel walls and the red is on the focal point wall in the kitchen.

Family Room Remodel Question by spaz5629: Remodeling family room floors, Best floor to use? Please read!!?
I’m leaning towards Pergo. But here’s my problem, I wanted to acid stain the floor, but my first child is on the way! I don’t want something that will hurt him as he learns to walk. I don’t want carpet, and cork flooring is a little more expensive than I wanted to go with. Any ideas?
Family Room Remodel Question by jaymi1979: Remodeling my garage into a family room – Floor question?
I am remodeling my garage into a family room. It has a concrete floor, but I am building a “wood floor” over it… putting down floor joists and a subfloor.
My question is – With this kind of construction, should I use 3/4″ plywood or 3/4 wafer board? And why
Best answer:
Answer by jimd52936 use ply wood wafer board is OK for siding but for flooring plywood is the proffered choice. wafer board is more susceptible to moisture then plywood

Family Room Remodel Question by purple_rose131: We are remodeling our family room and we are trying to figure out what color to paint the walls. ?
We want the room to feel really cozy, but we want it to look real updated. The furniture is oak and the couches are a plaid, which have blue, hunter green, raspberry, and beige in it. The room had a country feeling to it with a hunter green and white goose border and the wallpaper had a tiny flower and heart print in it. This room was probably remodeled in the late 80′s. We are not going to buy new furniture.
I like either taupe, green, or burgundy color.

Answer by XxcheerbabexX Buy Cabin Wallpaper. It looks like a cabin, its easy to put on, its Styrofoam, and it matches. I’m not sure where you can buy it. Search the internet.
