Answer by FaZizzle I’m against online furniture stores. It’s highly impractical. Why would you spend more on shipping than you would on gas to drive to a furniture store? It’s the American way to NEED everything now with money you don’t have to impress people you don’t like.
We shop from Nebraska Furniture Mart, which is about a 30 minute drive away from us. (http://www.nfm.com). We also shop around the area and buy floor models. We get 10-20% off by doing that alone.

Home Decorators Collection Question by Alex: Need help decorating apt.?
I’m not an expert decorator so I need some serious advice on hooking up my apt. I’m looking for LR and BR furniture. I’m kinda fixated on the mission style furniture collection at Target, which I found very appealing, and inexpensive. I like it because it matches the finish of my dining room set which is an oak finish… it’s not mission style but looks like it would blend in pretty well. My friend disagrees with me on it because she says that mission style furniture is more suitable for offices. So now I’m undecided and not sure what to go with. Would it be wise to go with my initial decision, or should I look at a different type of furniture style instead? And also, is it common for people to have different styles of furniture for every room in their home, because I wouldn’t mind getting mission style for my LR, but not sure if I wanna include it in the BR. I’m a bachelor, I live alone, so I need decor that can suit me well. Any advice would help. Thanx!

Answer by Belize Missionary Buy the furniture you like -not what your friend likes. You have to live with it, she doesn’t.
You can have all different styles of furniture. Use color to tie the rooms together. Say for instance you have a navy blue comforter on your bed, then you might use the same navy blue for towels in the bath, throw pillows in the living room, and plates in the kitchen. Not all matchy-matchy, but just a common color in all the rooms. I use little touches of black – like a picture frame, a brass lamp with a black shade, etc.
One nice thing about having different styles of furniture is that it begins to look like you have collected things over time and not like you went out and bought everything at once. It is more personal and easier to live with.

I got a new leather couch and love seat set that didn’t have a coordinating ottoman..i wanted to pick one up but wanted some suggestions from decorators..

Answer by Grandma6 If you try to go with brown leather you run the risk of not matching the browns and looking odd because of it. If I were you I would pick an upholstered ottoman with browns in the print. That way it will stand out (good) instead of sticking out (bad).

When walking into our 1100 sq ft home through the front door there is a wall 19 by 8 ft tall. It is stippled with drywall mud and is painted a light creme color. In the top right area of the wall is a wooden air intake vent probably 1.5 by 1.5 ft on the leftmost side of the wall is an open square arch leading to the hallway. Directly to the right (halfway up on the wall) is our square, white thermostat (about the size of a large index card).
Between this space is what this question is about. Because our living room is so small making it appear larger is of the utmost importance. My dad suggested a big wrought-iron mirror and i thought a collection of small mirrors, but my mom wants a painting.
Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas regarding this area. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for the long description also. Thanks for the help!

Do you need a real estate (or other type) license to decorate model homes? Is there a course or school for model home decorators? Where would you begin if you were interested in doing this for a living?

Answer by sparklesontheoceans Start with your local colleges, even community colleges, and look into Interior Design. There should be some things there for you, and you could get a degree, or a certificate of some kind. Go for it!

I bought most my furniture through a home designer because she basicially designed my home inside with the builders and the furniture is unlike you can find at a furniture store….how much do you think she marked it up? plus she designed how everything looks inside.

Answer by Orlando57 if custom ,she or he might have made as much as 25% but as little as 5% as a kick from the cabinett makers or the upholsterer ,, but if you paid all the money,, knowing it cost too much ,,,wont make you feel good now ,,will it ,, next time offer to go shopping with the person doing the room ,,tell them you love to look at fabrics and furniture, and are interested in their work, then after call the shops or go there to find out a sample of the prices,, then you know ,,

Has anyone ordered from this website? What were your experiences with the quality & service of the items. I’m looking to purchase the “Rana” chaise lounge and if anyone has this item, please let me know if it’s comfortable, worth the money. Answer by eskie lover I have used them to purchase area rugs, furniture, outdoor items and lighting. I have found them to be of high qualitiy, they have great prices and great customer service. Their colors are pretty accurate, particularly on the area rugs. They used to send swatches of fabric upon request, but I don’t know whether they still do.
