Living Room Remodel – Good Accent Color for Living Room Remodel?

Living Room Remodel Question by VAgirl: Good Accent Color for Living Room Remodel?
I’m redecorating our living room, and need some good suggestions as to a good accent color I can use to tie the colors together. Some things are stationary and can’t be changed at the moment b/c it’s an apartment, and we’re not allowed to… so I have to figure out how to best work with what I’ve got. Here goes:
The living room is a little small, 16′x13′. The walls are all white (can’t change that) and the carpet is a light brown (like coffee w/milk, lol) (can’t change that,either). My wall unit and end tables are a deep, rich espresso color, almost looks black. The loveseat is really pretty mix of brown/tan/olive, woven in a very tight, small pattern so that from a distance, the couch just looks medium brown. The other couch, the longest one, has a tan pattern on it that I’m looking to cover at some point w/a slipcover, just not sure what color would be best. Things on the wall are temporary right now, as I’m redoing that part, too.
So…
Wall 1 = TV wall unit
Wall 2 = Loveseat and two end tables on each side
Wall 3 = Large couch
Wall 4 = Window and the front door, no room for furniture there
What color would be best for an accent color? Should I use it on the curtains, or throw pillows, or accessories in the room – where is the best placement of the accent color you suggest?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi VAgirl,
From what you have asked and the colors you have noted, I would suggest as follows:
Window Treatments: Tan or Neutral off white Tab Top curtains in a color(s) similar to the carpeting of your current Latte Tan
)
Accents colors: Much of your room is very nature inspired colors, I would add a color in a Terra Cotta Rust or Deep Pumpkin color. Yes, toss pillows and textured Throw for your room.You could also choose a Burgundy, Mustard Yellow or Turquoise colors as well. I know that some may squint at the thought of using turquoise but it actually matches well with your colors.
Easy way to find a color that you really like, is to grab an article of clothing lets say a shirt or sweater toss it in the couch to represent a toss pillow and see if it works visually for you. It is after all what you like best. This is merely a suggestion to keep your costs in mind, so you don’t come home with the wrong colors.
Your Curtains do not have to match your pillows or couch. But, should/could match carpeting yes, old school designers trix, but still working in today’s world.
Long sofa: eventually when you do cover it I would choose a solid fabric or one that has a tone on tone weave lighter neutral shade. Add more pillows
)
Placement of color: Toss Pillows, Candles, Plants and baskets. * Always work in odd numbers of groupings 1, 3,5 etc. Happy Decorating!

Living Room Remodel

At this point, I’ve treated the ceiling with a very light bleach-water mix, sprayed it with some stuff that prevents and kills mold/mildew (I forget the name) and then I painted the ceiling with Killz just to be sure. After painting the ceiling, I drilled a hole for the double-gang switch box. I’m putting this switch next to the doorway so I don’t have to walk across the room to flip on a light. I used my awesome new Milwaukee hammer drill. This thing cuts through concrete like butter.

green would look great and could carry you through any season. Also you could find many things that are green and brown, like paintings or throw pillows with trees on them. You could use two different shades of green, and one shade of brown to tie in colors. Find an assortment of pillows, pictures, coasters, knicknacks, candles, curtains, that match. The key to my idea is to use three colors and carry those colors on throughout the room: one that matches the furniture(brown), one that is a lighter shade of the furniture (the color of your carpet for example) and then a color that pops like green. Of course, finding pillows and other decorative items with white in them could make the white walls match too. you could decorate with bonsai trees and all sorts of nature-inspired things using this theme!

Here are a couple of ideas with white walls dark accent pieces. I would stick with a fairly monochromatic colour scheme because of the white walls. Keep any accent colours soft and light..such as pillows in a fabric picking up the olive and tans. Your tables are dark so lighting can be a dark brown with off white or white shades. I would slipcover in a light tan colour. Window treatment can be a simple roman in off white or textured linen mix fabric to the floor in an off white depending on your windows and what you like. A couple of glass vases with river rocks of varying tans and browns in them blend nicely containing white tulips when you feel like some fresh flowers or just left as is. Picture frames in a dark brown.
