Living Room Remodeling Question by Barbara W: The walls in my living room have separated from the cement floor. How can I prevent this from getting worse?
I believe the foundation is settling and caused this gap. We are remodeling this area and would like to be sure that it won’t continue to separate further. How can this be prevented?

Answer by paul
It is also likely that the cement floor has cracked in order to produce a noticeable separation. You will want to locate the crack and determine its extent. You may need a contractor to advise you how to proceed from there. The walls are attached to the floor with bolts poured or drilled into the cement Unless improperly done it would be putting a lot of stress on the integrity of your house to have them separate very much.

Big fake jewels were totally that time period! I am re-doing my room in a very similar way! Try thick crown molding in a crisp white with robin egg blue for the walls. I would go with a very bold rug, like a zebra print or another skin; it is modern but still has that old hollywood glamor look! Try these links:

Room Remodeling Question by : How do I start remodeling my room?
Well to describe my room, it’s very small and i have a bunch of stuff sitting around from when i was in elementary!! such as stuffed animals, posters, etc. and I feel like it makes my room look even smaller than what it really is! Also I need some stores to buy some furniture so if you could include that in your answer as well that’d really help me out! Thanks!

Living Room Remodeling – I need your advice on the saying for over my living room archway!?

Living Room Remodeling Question by mazey1967: I need your advice on the saying for over my living room archway!?
I am remodeling my living room, it’s done in mostly country decor, in tan and burgandy. I have an archway that goes from my living room to my kitchen, and another that goes to my hallway. My friend, who’s an excellent decorator and painter (thank heaven) has suggested that we paint something over the archways…some cute saying. I have it narrowed down to a few. Please tell me what you like. They are 1) All Because Two People Fell In Love 2) Love Makes This House A Home 3) God Bless Our Home 4) Home Sweet Home 5) Faith Can Move Mountains 6) Live Your Dreams, Love Your Life 7) Love Lives Here. I also open for suggestions if you have any!!!

Laundry Room Remodel Question by brown eyes: how to remodel your house with little money?
My house was built in 1977 and it needs remodeled. Everything looks outdated and ugly.

- Needs new toilets , sinks , bathtub (toilets and sinks are all rusted)

- every room needs new tiles and rugs (current tiles and rugs look old , rotted , and ugly)

- new curtains (the current ones are 30 yrs. old and ripped up)

- almost every room needs a paint job

- some cracks in the ceiling needs patched up

- Kitchen cabinets need cleaned good. Some green stick stuff is growing on them. It smells under the kitchen sink. We’ve had leaks under the sink for years.

We need to do the …

1. living room needs a new rug. New curtains.
2. family room needs a rug and a paint job. New curtains.
3. Garage needs cleaned
4. the office needs repainted and a new rug.
5. Parents’ bedroom needs a paint job needs repainted and a new rug. Bathroom needs a new toilet and tiles. Shower needs cleaned.
6. hall bathroom needs a new toilet / bathtub / sink. New tiles. Mold is growing out of the sink and floor.
7. Hallway needs a new rug
8. 3 bedrooms need new rugs and paint.
9. The bathroom downstairs needs new tiles , new sink , and new toilet.
10. Laundry room downstairs needs new tiles and repainted.

11. The backyard :
- I need a truck the haul stuff away
– grass need mowed
J10 :
We have a big backyard. It would take two extention cords for the lawn mower to cut the grass.

Answer by J10
You can cut down cost by a lot if you do everything or almost everything yourself, a lot of elbow grease will save you a lot of money. If you are lazy then forget it you have to spend the money. I can’t believe you haven’t mowed the lawn yet, why did you even list that here, where you expecting someone else to do it for you, if you were then you have to spend the money.

Living Room Remodeling – Q&A: Design ideas (color) for living room with black leather couches?

December 23rd, 2011 4 comments

Living Room Remodeling Question by Yahoo!: Design ideas (color) for living room with black leather couches?
Heres the deal, I am ussually very good with color and coming up with combinations. My style is contemporary, and I am not afraid of bolder color choices. The nature of the project includes remodeling my living room, including demo of old horse-hair plaster walls and ceiling. I plan on insulationing, new electrical, reccessed lighting and sheetrock. I currently have black leather couches, maple pergo floors and white trimwork. I would like help with a paint color that will complement the leather couches. I was thinking a grey such as benjamin moore “copley gray” or “smoked oyster” with white trim. The dining room which is seperated by a opening is a “ruby red” with white trim, and the entry hallway or foyer is a light sand color which may change…
So I guess what I am looking for is some design ideas or color combinations that will work for color of the walls, or if you think I have chosen the right colors say so…Please keep my style in mind which is contemporary icon smile Living Room Remodeling Q&A: Design ideas (color) for living room with black leather couches?

Answer by Allergic To Eggs
black looks **amazing** against gorgeous aqua/cyan … it’s contemporary and unexpected and people will start conversations asking you why you chose it… however you needn’t paint all the walls cyan, maybe just 2 or 1 to be safe

to go even safer you can do a muted robins egg blue and again 2 walls or 1 if you dont want to do all the walls in a single color

Laundry Room Remodel – Interior Designers! What should I do with a big empty living room?

Laundry Room Remodel Question by Daniel H: Interior Designers! What should I do with a big empty living room?
I’ve got a 13′x23′ (299 sq ft in a rectangle) living room downstairs in my split level home. Here are pictures of it before the remodel and before we got moved in:

3711771955 e63a112c60 Laundry Room Remodel Interior Designers! What should I do with a big empty living room?

It is now all fresh off-white paint, flush-mount light fixtures and it’s really bright and pops when you see it. New carpet is going to be off white with tan and brown fleck in it. There is new tile in the landing by the stairs. The far door is a small bathroom and the closer door is the laundry room. There is also a small overhang in the middle of the room that you can see in the pictures.

Now for the question- what should I do with this room? It’s huge, new and completely empty. I have a functional living room upstairs, and I don’t want this to be a “game room” nor a work out room. I was thinking that I would make it a second living room, perhaps move my 42″ flat screen down there and get some big comfortable couches, but that would only fill up the half of the room near the stairs. How could I utilize this room, yet still have it work together so it doesn’t look too distanced? What should I do? Any help is appreciated!

Answer by Samantha M
I can see this room as an informal lounge area. I am not an Interior Designer but I do have a flair for Interior Design. Do you have a particular theme? Do you have a view? Do you like a contemporary style, or a country home style?

Perhaps have custom made bookcases take up the space of one wall, along one side, I visualise a comfy leather chair, with a lamp so you can read by. A huge rug in the centre of the room and a chunky lounge suite, and coffee table in the centre of the rug. Also a sofa table behind the sofa in a chunky timber. A computer area perhaps could be incorporated too.

Laundry Room Remodel – How to get hubby to do a better job on our home remodels?

Laundry Room Remodel Question by Holly Berry: How to get hubby to do a better job on our home remodels?
We’ve been in this 2 bedroom 1950′s house for a year and have updated everything except the garage. We’re converting it into a master bedroom/office/laundry room because I have a baby on the way which needs a bedroom.

I appreciate all my hubby’s help and the house looks much better than it did before. However, since the house was so nasty when we bought it, we were rushing to get everything done so it would be comfortable and there are a lot of sloppy areas which aren’t simple touch-ups – they’d need to be redone.

Hubby is impatient while working on the house and often gets frustrated because we don’t always have the right tools/materials and he is always losing stuff. He’s not detailed and likes to do things the quickest and easiest way possible. He knows how to do things the right way if he’d spend a little more time on projects.

I am a perfectionist and want this garage remodel to be done right and look nice since it will be my sanctuary but we can’t afford to hire a professional to do it. Hubby is a great loving person but when he works on the house, he gets frustrated and in a bad mood and it’s hard to tell him that I don’t like how he did things. I help out a lot but it’s hard to work with him. How can I persuade him to be patient, take his time and do things right on this project?

Best answer:

Answer by sooohmmm
My hubby is the same way. He gets all overwhelmed and freaks out and end up with a mess. What has helped is if he can get a friend to help him, or if we just break the big projects down into small pieces so that he doesnt feel like it has to all be done like right now. The conversion that yall are doing sounds like a big project so if I were you I would just tell him you dont care if it takes a year, and do the most important part first. Just keep reminding him that the 2 of you will prolly live there for years, so he can take his time. good-luck.

Room Remodeling Question by Matt S.: Im remodeling my powder room and possibly ran into some problems?
So Im remodeling my powder room
(1/2 bath) theres plaster in there which I just painted and its fine.. but theres also something called “Congo Wall” (which I painted over. It’s really old from what I understand. Anyway. Im in the process of putting a wooden baseboard up and the congo wall seems to be cracking a little. Not a lot though. Is this a serious problem? Also can anyone give me tips on putting down the wooden base board but making it look really fancy? I used a 1X2 or a 1X3 I think and I might put 1/4 round too but anyother suggestions would be helpful. So this is kinda like two questions in one! Thanks in advance!

Best answer:

Answer by goatslayerwp
Be very careful when applying the baseboard. It would be best to put it in with heavy duty construction adhesive since it it seems as though your wall is delicate. Also, fill the cracks and finish the surface nice and even before applying a quality latex paint. Also, try taking a router to the tops edges of your 1X3. It would have a better look than just a quarter round on the top the top.
