Room Remodeling Question by : How should I start remodeling my room?
So I want to set up a home theater thing and run wires through the walls so they are not visible. I dont need to tear down walls but I just need access to run wires through them how should i do this?

Answer by Evan make a scale drawing of the room …you will be doing drywall repair no way around it ..you will need access room to drill through the studs,so one can pass the wires through

Home Decorators Question by Nathan P: Home Decorators Outlet: Vanities?
Are the Vanities on Home Decorator’s outlet website, costructed from high quality finished wood that is both solid and scratch resistant? I recently bought a solid wood console table online that turned out to have no drawer tracks, thin wood panels and stained finish that constantly nicks up. Are the vanities at least standard Home Depot quality?

I used to look at their catalogs and wonder why this great looking furniture was so affordable…then I visited a store and realized the truth. In person their furniture is shoddily made and unstable. It’s really no better than the prefab furniture you can buy at Wal-Mart or Target.
Check their website to see if they have a store near you so you can see it for yourself.

Home Improvement Projects Question by k~prez: How do you prioritize home improvement projects for the resale of a home?
My husband and I are planning to move as soon as we find a home that fits us. We have been looking for a year now with no luck and with the housing market being so bad, it might be a while so we have decided to do some improvements to our home in the meantime to increase the value of our home. We want to paint, put tile in the bathrooms & kitchen, add more insulation, finish the basement, maybe add a deck, etc. How do we know what is the most important to do first since we can’t afford to do everything at once? Also, fyi, it was a brand new house when we bought it, however, it is one of those subdivision cookie cutter houses that wasn’t built with the best quality or workmanship. It’s not a dump by any means, but it could use some improvements here and there. Any advice is appreciated!

Answer by ♥ star ♥ We have been renovating our house slowly. We hope to sell for profit also. The estste agents told us that the most important things are, The kitchen & bathrooms. Painting is recommended also as it makes such a huge difference. If your bathrooms and kitchen are nice, i would recommend the painting and tiles first, then a deck. An outdoor area is always a good selling point.
Family Room Remodel Question by Crazy Cousin: How big should a great room be?
My husband and I are remodeling & adding to our house. Our architect came up with a design that has ample room for the kitchen and dining areas of the great room, but it looks like the living/family room section will only be 12′x 22’8″. Does that seem like enough space?
The overall size of the great room is the previously mentioned size, plus 30’6″ x 20′ for the kitchen and dining area.

Home Improvement Contractors Question by daphusa: home improvement salesman has a revoked license (NYC)?
I just found out the sales person has a revoked license when he wrote a contract for me and a home improvement contractor/renovator. The contractor has valid licenses and paperwork, but is the contract still valid? If the contractor knew, can I get my money back?

But maybe give him a chance to see if he does anygood.
Maybe his license was revoked because of his failure to pay.
Not paying doesnt always mean bad service…
Though it doesnt look good.
Maybe ask him for a refund.
Otherwise it sounds like you need to cut your losses count your blessings and move on.

Family Room Remodel Question by : which is better? a design-build firm, or a separate designer and builder for a home addition/remodel?
We are planning a renovation–remodeling the kitchen, tearing down a wall, redoing the entry way, and adding a family room–to make a “great room” (kitchen/family/dining). we are debating between a separate architect/designer, or a design-build combo….thoughts?

Answer by Guest Both the architect/designer and design-build combo should employ an architect for the design of modifications you would like to perform. Some design-build combos do not have architects on staff and their drawings are usually prepared with less detail leaving more to your and their imagination which they get to interpret as they build. See if they have a registered architect they will be using.
Although you will not see a lot of difference in the cost of the design as provided by two or three architect/designer firms, you will be able to put(or have the architect / designer put) the drawings out for bid by three or four contractors that they have had good luck and received quality work on their past projects. This cost reducing process will not be provided by the design-build approach.
You will have all your eggs in one basket with the design-build approach. You will have an overall lower total project cost if you go with the design build combo but you will have very little say in any conflicts or misunderstandings because they have all the players on their side. You will never hear the architect say that any change must be made because that would be counterproductive for the design-build firm. The total cost will be less because you will receive less.
If you are looking for quality work separate the designer and builder. If you want to think you are saving money, may sacrifice quality, use design-build. A design-build approach will complete the projects most rapidly. They can start the work before the complete design has been completed.

Family Room Remodel Question by Me, Myself & I: Approximately how much would it cost to completely remodel the inside of a two-family A-frame house?
I am curious as to about how much it would cost to paint (house currently has lead paint) the inside of an 8-room house (two floors), completely remodel the bathroom and kitchen, sand the hardwood floors, wallpaper all rooms, and put down new linoleum on the kitchen floor and update all the electrical outlets (service has been updated from the street and in the cellar). The house has new windows and a new heating system. Hopefully, answers will be from construction people who have experience. Thanks!

Answer by Khavren You dont’ want to know cost, because that will vary based on the location the house is in, the contracter you are able to make a deal with, and the amount of red tape you have to go through with the local gov. You want to ask how much TIME that sort of job would probably take.
